Negative Press
This morning I was skimming through different online newspapers
for articles about donor sperm.
Surprisingly, all the articles that I found were very negative, and were
nothing that I would want to share with my readers. My last blog was about my being very
passionate about the process, and having to deal with uneducated individuals
and answering a few of their questions.
Now I have to learn to deal with the negative press.
As I sat here searching for something positive, I began
wondering if the people that write these negative things have ever really known
anyone who was dealing with infertility.
One article today was about families paying for sperm. It was suggested that, instead the female go
to a bar and find herself a man for the night.
Yes, that would be a lot cheaper, but the emotions involved in making
the baby would be out of whack. What if
the female is married, does her husband go to the bar and help out, or should
he sit at home and just wait around? How
does she know that this “stranger” is disease free?
Using donor sperm is tough emotionally, yes. However, the families that utilize the sperm will
get a full medical history of the donor.
They’ll get to read the profiles of hundreds of males and select the one
that suits them the best. They’ll even
get to see a current photo of the donor.
And, most of all, they’ll know that their donors have been fully tested
for infectious diseases and many genetic diseases, too.
No, I cannot speak about infertility from a personal
experience that I have had. However, I
can speak for the many women and men whose stories I’ve listened to or read in emails. They do not understand why they have to go
through this. I can speak for the women
who call crying and just want a baby”like everyone else.” I can speak for the couples who are ashamed
to tell friends and family they are going through the process because of what
they will say, think, or even do to them.
Working at Xytex is a true blessing. It has opened my eyes and my heart to the
many issues that a lot of people are dealing with around us. I hope that I can change the minds of a few
people in this world.
