Vial Types

We require a woman to be under the care of a physician before units are shipped. Your doctor can advise the type of procedure and the type of units needed. The required type of vial(s) depends on the type of treatment.

Xytex is committed to providing:

  • 12.5 million motile sperm per thawed 0.5 milliliter vial in both unwashed samples for ICI (intracervical insemination) and washed samples for IUI (intrauterine insemination)
  • 5 million motile sperm in thawed 0.5 milliliter ART (assisted reproductive technology) vials
  • A minimum of 2 million motile sperm per thawed 0.5 milliliter ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) vials

There are several accepted methods for counting sperm, and each can yield different results. This guarantee expires 120 days after units are shipped from our facility, including transit time.

When selecting a donor, it is important to know what type of unit you will need. We offer ART (assisted reproductive technology) and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) units that are used in more invasive procedures.

  • ART units contain 5 million motile sperm per 0.5 milliliter vial and are most often used in IVF (in vitro fertilization) – sperm and egg are combined in a petri dish for fertilization.
  • ICSI units contain 2 million motile sperm per 0.5 milliliter vial and are used specifically for ICSI – removing a single sperm from the sample and injecting it straight into an egg.

We also offer both washed and unwashed units, which undergo separate preparation methods.

  • An unwashed unit is frozen in its most natural state, allowing sperm to remain in its natural seminal fluid. Unwashed units are most often used for ICI (intracervical insemination) – sperm enters through the cervix, much like in sexual intercourse.
  • A washed unit separates the sperm from its natural seminal fluid and is frozen in a preserving fluid. Removing seminal fluid helps minimize cramping that can result from prostaglandins, hormones that cause the uterus to contract. Washed units are most often used for IUI (intrauterine insemination).

While we offer washed vials prepared for IUI treatment, we also offer unwashed vials, which are suitable for IUI, but require washing by the inseminating clinic.

Please consult your physician for the appropriate vial type for your procedure.

Please note, due to inventory, not all donors have all vial types available at all times.

Xytex products are stored in 0.5 milliliter vials.
